Cherry Creek 2024 :: 5 Days ~ 37.47 miles
Since George & I started plying the Emigrant backcountry we have walked/rode along the majority of the Huckleberry Trail from Kennedy Meadows to Huckleberry Lake. However, no trek is complete until you walk the last mile. Up to this point we had covered 26.5 direct miles over 34 years of short & long trips. Our plan this year was to connect the final 10.9 miles of this epic 37.4 mile trail thru the heart of the Emigrant Wilderness. Follow along!

Huckleberry Lake 2014
Huckleberry Lake 2014 Base Camp
1998 was the last year we stayed at Huckleberry Lake and the target for this year as a basecamp trip. A long horseback ride takes you to one of the largest natural lakes in the area fed by several check dam lakes upstream (Snow & Bigelow). There were several peaks in the area for George to climb and new points of interest for me to photograph. And with the lake having a good fishing reputation, George Sr. and John were raring to come along.
Emigrant Meadow Lake 2012
Emigrant Base 2012 :: 5 Days & 47.1 Miles
Year 26 was to be a short trip for our annual wilderness trek because a dry snow/rain year had taken a toll on most of the Emigrant. However, a series of check dams at High and Emigrant Meadow Lake hold back the winter snow melt-- as they were intended when constructed between 1920 and 1951-- and Emigrant Lake was still high.
Kennedy Lake 2008
Kennedy Lake 2008 :: 4 Days & 13 Miles
Now for something completely different! For all the years we have plied the backcountry, our significant others have not joined in for various reasons. Whether it was the seemingly tightly wound schedules we planned or the wild eye wonder when we would recall a grueling hike thru bramble and rock slides, our yearly trips must have given off a perception of madness mixed with mayhem and topped off with momentary lapses of reason
Three Bucks 2003
Emigrant Over-the-Dome 2003 :: 11 Days & 59.3 Miles
We have sliced the Emigrant Wilderness in various shapes over the years. However, this trip was to tackle the central feature of our summer playground, Granite Dome that we have gazed at and admired this geological wonder. It was time to sit on its perch and drink in 360° of stupendous views.We started off with the usual hospitable ride from the Kennedy Meadows Resort + Pack Station. A short 5 hours later George and I, with his good friend Jim from Boston, were at Emigrant Meadow Lake, a favorite for us.
Snow Lake Camp 2001
Emigrant Lakes 2001 :: 8 days & 45.4 miles
This years planning seesawed between 2 different itineraries that we did not finalize until just a few weeks before our start date. Fortunately, the Kennedy Meadows staff was flexible and accommodated our gyrations. Our goal was to visit as many new lakes that the eight days would allow and we ended up with 5 more notches on our belts.

Long Lake 1998
Emigrant Loop 1998 :: 11 days & 48.6 miles
Well finally were on our trip. This was three years in the making, frustrated by heavy snow falls the past three years and our goal to be the first in. Two times we optimistically planned our trip under the fantasy that the snow would melt and part in front of us for a loop trip around Emigrant Dome, the geological center of Emigrant Wilderness. Two years we had to re-route and swing between Kennedy Lake and Relief Reservoir.
