Mauna Kea Peak 2012
Mauna Kea Peak 2012 :: Hawaii Hi-Point @ 13796'
All quests have an end-game and George's was to finish the high points in each state with the final in Hawaii on Mauna Kea, translated as the " White Mountain" from the Hawaiian dialect. We were all set to go this past March, George, John and myself found ourselves driving the many miles from Kona to the 'rustic' cabin we would call home for a night to stage and ready for the climb. These hunting cabins were the only place to rent close to Mauna Kea, as you are not allowed to camp overnight in the park.

If you have navigated around this site to the Destinations home page and clicked on the Alpinist Peaks page, you would know that my best friend George is close to climbing all 50 U.S. state high points. I have been on several of these with him, either accompanying him to the top or providing logistics and moral support. New Mexico was one of those states that stood in his way. A trip to Santa Fe was in order.
KS and OK High Points 2008
High Points 2008 :: Kansas & Oklahoma
What takes 15 hours and 13 minutes over 753 miles to become 21 hours over 850+ miles? A weekend trip with George and Mark (Ranger + Bwana). George planned this as a quick weekend trip to capture two more US hi-points, Kansas and Oklahoma, which were relatively easy places to get to. Hah!! We met at Denver on a perfect clear fall day and started the first leg of 197 miles to Mt. Sunflower, the Kansas hi-point at 4039'.
Mt Humphrey Peak 2005
Humphrey Peak 2005 :: Az High point @ 12637'
This was one of our last minute let just do it trips. I was in Phoenix for a staff meeting and the highest peak in Arizona was just a short drive away near Flagstaff. George flew in Friday night and off we went from shirt sleeve warmth to long sleeve cool in the matter of a few hours. We woke early, well not real early, and headed for the trailhead at the local ski resort. It was a clear, cool and crisp day, just perfect for hiking and the winds at peak elevation were mild at best. We

Mt Elbert (CO) & Wind River Ridge (WY) 2004
In 2004, George was hot on the trail of capturing the US 50 high points. I accompanied him on two trips, Mt Elbert in Colorado (success) and Gannett Pean in Wyoming (almost). For transparency, I made it up the easy peak which was a bit mind blowing how easy it was.

Ranger (George) & Bwana (Mark) Treks Over the Many Years
From that first glimpse of the Emigrant Wilderness in August 1986 while on a camping trip at Kennedy Meadows, Mark and George have been trekking the wild lands to this day and beyond. Our motto, keep the bones moving and never stop until it is time or the adventure fades. And the adventure will never fade. Cheers to all who have followed us these past years and stay tuned for more!!! (Click on Destination for direct access to trips)
