Tahiti First Visit
This was to be our first overseas trip together and what a spectacular destination. Tahiti French Polynesia with tropical islands, breezes and scenery that goes on and on. Betsey's super travel agent set us up to stay in Moorea at the Hotel Sofitel and an extra treat for me was the flight down on Corsair. The aircraft we flew was an original PanAm aircraft, line number 50, which I believe is the oldest B747 I have flown on. It was a French charter flight that originated in Paris with a stopover at LAX. Was rather tight seating as I remember and the food service left much to be desired. Which really did not matter as the amazing destination was the draw.
Hotel Sofitel
We arrived by ferry and were shuttled over to the hotel. Beautiful grounds nestled in a blue lagoon, with a long pier that afforded dark sky star viewing (more on that later!). Being our first foray into resort traveling, we opted for a food package that included breakfast and dinner and happy we did, as go it on our own back then was rather pricey. Great food, entertainment every night and a beach bungalow hooked us for future travels.
Island Trekking
With our trusty rental car, Mega Club-Ranch in open air mode, off we went to tour the island and see the sights.
Dancing the Night Away
Dance is an integral part of Polynesian life and the Sofitel was in-step with nightly performances. Betsey was on the floor every chance she got. However, I have 3 left feet but was coaxed out one time and stayed in the back as much as possible. I very much prefer to watch Betsey dance and weave her magic!
Ultra-Light Island Flight
On the hotel beach there was an enterprising young Frenchman with a two seater ultralight. I watched it take off and land several times and before I knew it, Betsey had set me up for an island flight. A thrill indeed, but not the highlight of the trip.
Everlasting Memory
Well, now we come to the end of our story. Those tropical breezes, starlight nights, balmy weather, time together gives one courage to ask a life changing question. On a starry night with the Southern Cross above us, my heart and soul told me Betsey was the love of my life and we took the plunge and entwined our lives. Still crazy after all these years!
