Seward ~ Matanuska Valley ~ Juneau ~ AWCC 2013
One of the advantages of business travel are those opportunities to add some fun time to hard work. Now, I will be the first to admit that going to Alaska for work, for me, is not a bad thing. And having the opportunity to have Betsey join me for the weekend, is icing on the cake. This year it was a few days in Seward taking in a Resurrection Bay tour to soak in the scenery and catch some wildlife. And we hit the jackpot. As Betsey has described it, it was like a three part play with scene after scene unfolding in front of your eyes. Here are the cast of characters.

Denali ~ Hatcher Pass 2012
In my travels for work, Alaska is a once-a-quarter visit and for the most part the weather is on the challenged side. However, close to the summer months the conditions get to a bearable equilibrium when the land slowly reveals itself from its winter sleep before the masses invade. This past year, May was the perfect opportunity to get Betsey up to the last frontier and to one of the crown jewels of the National Park system in the United States.

AWCC ~ Exit Glacier ~ Colony Glacier 2011
As winter approaches the northern state, temperatures drop, the rain rolls in and the Anchorage area starts to quiet down from the summer rush. These are my favorite times of the year. While the weather was not cooperating, I drove out to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center that has a simple mission, " A non-profit organization dedicated to preserving Alaska's wildlife through conservation, education, and quality animal care." Located at the end of Turnagain Arm along the Seward Highway, there are 170 acres of open spaces (electrically fenced) that contain a wide assortment of Alaska's wildlife, along with a 65 acre plot of Wood Bison that are part of a program to re-introduce the species to the wilds of Alaska.

Anchorage Basin ~ Kenai ~ Turn Again Arm 2008-9
Headed up north on another trip to see the vast lands of Alaska in and around Anchorage. My friend Jim once again kindly offered some local sightseeing and to take me up on a flight, and this time we were going to try our luck at fishing! Up we went hoping to sneak thru the back end of Turn Again Arm to a hot lake for salmon. However, the weather did not cooperate, so we headed for the Kenai Wildlife Refuge and Lake Vogel. It was a bit of bumpy trip but I held my own and got to see yet another jewel of this wide open country. The fishing never materialized, however a day flying in Alaska is its own reward.
